Lynx Reintroduction Worries Colorado Ranchers

Real Audio

LYNX REINTRODUCTION WORRIES COLORADO RANCHERS. BOB ELLISON REPORTS.

ACTUALITIES COME FROM LA PLATA COUNTY, COLORADO SHEEP RANCHER J.PAUL BROWN. LA PLATA IS SPELLED L-A SPACE P-L-A-T-A.

THERE ARE TWO EXTRA ACTUALITIES FOLLOWING THE STORY. IN THE FIRST EXTRA ACTUALITY, BROWN SAYS THERE IS NO REASON TO REINTRODUCE THE LYNX TO SOUTHWESTERN COLORADO. IN THE SECOND EXTRA ACTUALITY, BROWN SAYS HE AND HIS COLLEAGUES ARE WORRIED THE GOVERNMENT MAY FORCE RANCHERS TO STAY OUT OF CERTAIN AREAS IN ORDER TO HELP THE LYNX THRIVE.

STAND BY, THE STORY COMES FIRST IN 3...2...1...

(ELLISON) - SOUTHWESTERN COLORADO RANCHERS ARE AFRAID OF MORE PREDATORS AND MORE GOVERNMENT RED TAPE AFTER A FEDERAL JUDGE REFUSED LAST WEEK TO HALT THE REINTRODUCTION OF LYNX TO THEIR AREA. LA PLATA COUNTY SHEEP RANCHER J.PAUL BROWN SAYS LYNX, WHICH ARE LIKE LARGE WILDCATS, COULD THREATEN HIS LIVESTOCK.

(BROWN) - THEY ARE PREDATORS. I THINK THAT THEY WOULD, IF THE FOOD SOURCES WEREN'T THERE, AND THE SHEEP WERE THERE, THE LAMBS, THEY VERY POSSIBLY COULD KILL LAMBS.

(ELLISON) - BUT BROWN SAYS BURDENSOME GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS COULD BE MORE OF A THREAT THAN THE LYNX THEMSELVES.

(BROWN) - I BELIEVE THAT THEY WILL OUTLAW TOTALLY ANY KIND OF PREDATOR CONTROL AND THERE ARE A LOT OF PREDATORS HERE THAT WE HAVE TO CONTROL, THE COYOTE, MOUNTAIN LION AND THE BEAR IN PARTICULAR.

(ELLISON) - BROWN SAYS THE LYNX SHOULD BE RELEASED IN THE MORE HOSPITABLE NORTH CENTRAL AREA OF COLORADO. BUT HE SAYS WELL-CONNECTED PEOPLE THERE WOULD NOT STAND FOR IT.

(BROWN) - AND POLITICALLY THEY KNOW THEY CAN'T PUT THE LYNX IN THAT AREA AND SO THEY DUMPED ON US IN THE SAN JUAN.

(ELLISON) - THE COLORADO DIVISION OF WILDLIFE IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN RELEASING LYNX THIS MONTH.

BOB ELLISON, WASHINGTON.

(ELLISON) - STAND BY FOR THE FIRST EXTRA ACTUALITY. THE CUT RUNS 13 SECONDS IN 3...2...1...

(BROWN) - WE FEEL LIKE THAT THE LYNX INTRODUCTION HERE IN THE SAN JUAN IS DOOMED TO FAIL IN THE FIRST PLACE. THERE'S NOT ANY PROOF THAT THE LYNX WAS OVER HERE IN THE SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS IN SOUTHWESTERN COLORADO.

(ELLISON) - STAND BY FOR THE SECOND EXTRA ACTUALITY. THE CUT RUNS 16 SECONDS IN 3...2...1...

(BROWN) - THEY MAY REQUIRE US TO STAY AWAY FROM CERTAIN AREAS WHICH MIGHT END UP BREAKING US BECAUSE IT WOULD BE JUST FINANCIALLY PROHIBITIVE TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

(ELLISON) - THE FARM BUREAU RADIO NEWSLINE IS UPDATED EVERY MONDAY, WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY AT 5 P.M. EASTERN TIME. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING.
