Protect the Black Bears and Mountain Lions of Iowa.

Please do not participate unless you are a resident of Iowa.

Iowa SF 2169 would classify black bear and mountain lion as fur-bearing animals.  These intelligent animals would be grouped together with the prevalent beaver, mink, otter, muskrat, raccoon, skunk, opossum, and coyote.

Tragically, part of our natural history was lost when black bears and mountain lions were hunted to extinction in Iowa years ago.  Recently there have been a few sightings of mountain lions, but no black bear sightings.  A viable population of mountain lions or black bears does not exist in our state.  If a few lone mountain lions or black bears do succeed in establishing a population in our state, they should be protected, not hunted.  These rare predators should not be classified as "fur-bearing" mammals until there is a viable population in our state.
