You know why your doctor prescribed the drug. You know what's on the list of
warnings the pharmacist gave you. But reactions to drugs can differ by
individual. What can you actually expect when you start taking it?
No
one can guarantee how you'll react to a drug, but the Internet Drug Index
(www.rxlist.com) can help. Among the features of this longstanding site is
RxBoard, a set of bulletin boards where people trade descriptions of their
experiences with the 20 drugs most frequently prescribed in the United States,
as well as some alternative medications. Among the entries: arguments over
whether Prozac causes weight gain, testimonials to the new painkiller Celebrex,
and a report of fever and headache after taking ginkgo biloba.
The site
was created as a public service by a pharmacist named Neil Sandow. Recently it
began being hosted by HealthCentral, a medical-themed Internet portal that, like
many medical gateways these days, includes a link to an online pharmacy. As with
all sites on the Net, exercise caution and judgment.
