NABP Awards Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites™ (VIPPS™) Certification to Rx.com

8/29/00

Rx.com, Austin, Tex, has become the most recent online pharmacy to receive Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites™ (VIPPS™) certification from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP). Rx.com's Web site is located at http://www.rx.com/

"NABP is pleased to add Rx.com to the list of VIPPS-certified Web sites," says Jerry Moore, NABP president. "The VIPPS seal attests that Rx.com is properly licensed with the appropriate state boards of pharmacy and has met a rigorous 17-point criteria review that considers patient confidentiality, security of prescriptions, a quality assurance program, and patient-pharmacist consultation."

As a VIPPS-certified site, Rx.com may display the VIPPS hyperlink seal of approval on its Web site. By clicking on the VIPPS seal, consumers will be able to find the verified information they need to make informed decisions regarding their choice of online pharmacies. Consumers may also access the VIPPS database directly via NABP's Web site at www.nabp.net.

"To Rx.com, VIPPS certification marks our commitment to privacy, accuracy, and quality of care, characteristics that are necessary to establish the trust that is crucial in a pharmacist-patient relationship," says Cathy Steward, Rx.com vice president of managed care sales and administration. "With the VIPPS seal, our customers know that Rx.com is a dependable Internet pharmacy that not only guarantees their personal information will remain confidential but also complies with state pharmacy regulations and meets NABP's VIPPS criteria."

Rx.com, founded in 1998 by pharmacists and health care professionals, launched its Web site in October 1999. The site offers more than 25,000 prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, minerals, supplements, and other health products. Rx.com also offers access to health information and to its staff of pharmacists 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The company's automated prescription fulfillment center began operations in early 2000. Rx.com's principal financial sponsor is Alliance Uni Chem, Plc, London, a leading European distributor, wholesaler, and retailer of pharmaceutical, medical, and health care products.

Participation in the VIPPS certification program is voluntary. The program was developed to provide consumers with reliable means to identify those online pharmacies that have proven their preparedness to meet the unique challenges of the practice of pharmacy via the Internet.
