NABP Awards Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites™ (VIPPS™) Certification to Caremark

9/8/00

The online pharmacy of Caremark, Inc, Northbrook, Ill, is the most recent to receive Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites™ (VIPPS™) certification from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP). Caremark's Web site is located at http://www.rxrequest.com/.

"NABP is pleased to add Caremark's pharmacy site to the list of VIPPS-certified Web sites," says Jerry Moore, NABP president. "The VIPPS seal attests that the Caremark online pharmacies are properly licensed with the appropriate state boards of pharmacy and have met a rigorous 17-point criteria review that considers patient confidentiality, security of prescriptions, a quality assurance program, and patient-pharmacist consultation."

As a VIPPS-certified site, Caremark may display the VIPPS hyperlink seal of approval on its Web site. By clicking on the VIPPS seal, consumers will be able to find the verified information they need to make informed decisions regarding their choice of online pharmacies. Consumers may also access the VIPPS database directly via NABP's Web site at www.nabp.net.

"This certification for our online pharmacy services is another confirmation of the integrity of our operations," says Barry Hawkins, Caremark's vice president of pharmacy operations. With Caremark's focus on operational excellence, we were confident in being able to meet NABP's rigorous standards for certification. Supporting our members through Web-based services has become integral to our customers' satisfaction and now clients have additional evidence of our commitment to quality."

Caremark, a prescription benefit manager (PBM), provides comprehensive drug benefit services to more than 1,200 health plan sponsors and holds contracts to serve over 20 million participants through insurance companies, corporate health plans, unions, governmental agencies, and other funded benefit plans. The company operates three mail service pharmacies and 17, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)-accredited, specialized, therapeutic pharmacies for delivery of advanced medications to patients with chronic or genetic diseases.

Participation in the VIPPS certification program is voluntary. The program was developed to provide consumers with reliable means to identify those online pharmacies that have proven their preparedness to meet the unique challenges of the practice of pharmacy via the Internet.

NABP is the independent, international, and impartial Association that assists its member boards and jurisdictions in developing, implementing, and enforcing uniform standards for the purpose of protecting the public health.
