SENATE VOTE Bankruptcy (1)
The Senate voted 83-14 Wednesday to approve a bill that would overhaul the bankruptcy system by making it more difficult for people to erase their debts. The measure also raises the hourly minimum wage by $
1 to $
6.15 over the next three years and slashes various business taxes by $
76 billion over 10 years. The bill also includes a provision that would prevent violent protesters at
abortion
clinics from using
bankruptcy
laws to evade fines and damages. Supporters said the bill is needed to prevent people who can afford to pay off their debts from taking advantage of loopholes in current law. Opponents, including President Clinton, said some of the bankruptcy provisions were unfair and said the tax cuts were too big. A "yes" vote favors the bill. Votes: 1

HOUSE VOTES Taiwan (1)
The House on Tuesday approved, 341 to 70, a bill to strengthen military ties with Taiwan. Supporters of the measure said it was important to show support for Taiwan in light of China's military buildup. Opponents, including President Clinton, said the bill would exacerbate tensions between China and Taiwan. A "yes" vote favors the bill.
Liability (2)
The House on Wednesday approved, 222-194, a bill to create an 18-year liability limit when manufacturing companies are sued by employees injured by old equipment. Supporters said the bill protects manufacturers from "frivolous lawsuits." Opponents said it was unfair to workers who could be left with no recourse if injured by old equipment at their workplace. A "yes" vote favors the bill.
