GEKAS COMMENDS SENATE ON PASSAGE OF BANKRUPTCY REFORM BY OVERWHELMING
83-14 VOTE

WASHINGTON, D.C.--"America needs bankruptcy reform now so let’s get to Conference!" said Representative George W. Gekas (R-Pa.), following the Senate passage today of their version of H.R. 833, the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1999.

Congressman George W. Gekas (PA-17), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law and author of the House Bankruptcy Reform Act, today congratulated the Senate for completing its consideration of the Bankruptcy Reform Act.

"I am happy that the Senate was able to complete action on the Bankruptcy Reform Act in such a bipartisan fashion so early in the year, and I am particularly gratified about the veto-proof size of the vote," said Congressman Gekas. "Senators Lott, Hatch, Grassley and Torricelli and their staffs deserve thanks and praise for their efforts, and I look forward to working with them in Conference."

The House Bankruptcy Reform legislation (H.R. 833) which passed the House of Representatives last session by 313-108, is fairly similar to the Senate bill in its approach to bankruptcy reform, although there are a number of differences in the substance of the bills and in the extraneous amendments included in the Senate bill, such as an increase in the minimum wage.

"I am confident that the House and Senate can go to conference on these two bills and report out a consensus measure in a fair and expeditious manner," said Congressman Gekas. "I am optimistic that the final product will receive bipartisan support in the House and Senate and will be signed into law by the President."
