More than 1.4 million individuals and businesses filed for bankruptcy last year, a 2.7 percent increase over the previous year and the third consecutive record, according to a government report. The data, released by the Administrative Office of the US Courts, said bankruptcy filings by individuals increased by 3.6 percent to 1.4 million and filings by businesses fell by 17 percent to about 44,000. Federal legislation was introduced last week to reform current bankruptcy laws and curb the increase in personal filings. The legislation would make it harder for consumers to abandon their debts.
