HEADLINE: NEEDLE SLIPS

BODY:
Medical students need better coaching on how to avoid needle sticks and other slips that expose them to hepatitis, HIV and other deadly infections, say researchers from the CDC and other institutions. Between 1990 and 1996, 119 of 1,022 third- and fourth-year students at the University of California, San Francisco, accidentally stuck themselves with needles, got splashed with blood or had other exposures. "Medical students are often eager to perform procedures but lack the judgment and experience to determine whether they have the requisite skills to do so safely," the researchers wrote in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
