Statement by Candice Owley
Chair, Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals
on House Passage of Needlestick Bill

(The bill requires hospitals and other facilities to use safe needle systems and requires hospitals to include nurses and other health care workers in the decisions on which devices will be used.)

The House should be congratulated for passing the so-called needlestick bill, which will protect health care workers and patients and even save lives. We urge the Senate to give final approval. Tragic incidents have occurred because hospitals are not using the needleless devices that are available yet not expensive. Congress is on the verge of providing the kind of needlestick protection that all health care workers and patients deserve. It is particularly noteworthy that this health care safety bill was a bipartisan effort that put health care workers and patients above politics.
