Statement by
Candice Owley
Chair, Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals
on Senate Passage of Needlestick (Safe Medical Devices) Bill

(The bill requires hospitals and other facilities to use safe needle systems and requires hospitals to include nurses and other healthcare workers in the decisions on which devices will be used. The House passed the bill on October 3 and it now goes to President Clinton for his signature.)

This will be a lifesaver for healthcare workers scared to death of getting stuck with a contaminated needle. When healthcare workers use safe needle devices, there is no chance of accidental needlesticks that can transmit deadly diseases. It will now be the law of the land that hospitals and other healthcare facilities not only use these safe devices, but also must include healthcare workers in the decisions on which devices will be used. This is a big step in making healthcare facilities safer for workers and patients. Congress should be congratulated for passing the needlestick bill in such a laudable bipartisan fashion.
