Kelly Announces Agreement on Aviation Funding
for Local Airports
Federal Funding for Stewart, Westchester Airports to
Increase Significantly
WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep Sue Kelly (R-Katonah), a member of
the House Transportation Committee, today announced that the amount
of federal funding available to local airports will increase as a
result of completed negotiations between the Senate and the
House.
"This is great news for area
travelers," said Kelly. "More funding will mean safer skies and
fewer delays. This funding will help local airports in the Hudson
Valley better serve the traveling public."
Kelly said that as a result of this
legislation, Stewart International Airport will receive $2,957,100
each year, up from $1,478,550. Westchester County Airport will
receive $3,414,758, up from $1,707,379. Dutchess County Airport will
receive $150,000.
The bill, AIR 21, unlocks the
aviation trust fund and ensures that all trust fund money receipts
and interest will be invested in the Airport Improvement Program
(AIP) - the primary program for airport construction - and the
Facilities and Equipment Program - the chief program for air traffic
control equipment.
AIP funding is used on projects
that support aircraft operations including runways, taxiways,
aprons, noise abatement, land purchase, and safety, emergency or
snow removal equipment.
The three-year AIR 21 bill will
increase aviation investment by $10 billion. The total authorized
funding for federal aviation programs will be $40 billion over the
next three years. With negotiations completed, the House and the
Senate are expected to pass the measure within the next week or
so.
