Education Update 2000:

After-School Learning Opportunities

Jack asks YOU about Education Policy

Another issue that many high school students discussed in the Survey Project was that there is not anything for them to "do" in their towns.

The 21st Century Community Learning Centers, which was authorized under the last ESEA was created to provide expanded learning opportunities for children in a safe, drug-free and supervised environment. This program would enable schools to stay open longer, provide a safe place for homework centers, enrichment in the core academics as well as well as opportunities to participate in recreational activities, music, and technology education programs.

This program was created to award grants to rural and inner-city public schools or a consortium of schools to plan, implement or expand projects that would benefit the educational, health, social services, cultural and recreational needs of the community. It encourages schools to collaborate with other public and nonprofit agencies, local businesses, and postsecondary schools for the purpose of meeting the needs of the community.

There seems to be a need for such programs in our area. In Pennsylvania, there are six Community Learning Centers but they are located in the Philadelphia area. For more information on the 21st Century Community Learning Centers, you may contact my office or visit their website at http://www.house.gov/htbin/leave_site?ln_url=http://www.ed.gov/21stcclc&ln_desc=21st+Century+Learning+Centers.

Do you think that your community could benefit from such a program?
