BODY:
Five Title 1 Pasadena elementary schools were named as
1999-2000 Recognized Region IV Campuses by the Texas Education Agency.
Atkinson, Felix Morales, Mae Smythe and South Shaver
elementary schools received the Distinguished Schools status.
Pearl Hall Elementary earned an Honored School status.
Gloria Gallegos, Pasadena Independent School District's executive
director of Region IV Special Programs, made the announcement at the April 25
school board meeting.
"This means these schools out-performed every
district in Region IV," Gallegos said.
Title 1 are those schools that
receive federal funds under Title 1 of The Elementary and Secondary
Education Act. The act provides funding to improve schools with a
higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students.
There are
three categories for the 1999-2000 Title 1 recognized schools. A Distinguished
School must meet the Exemplary standard for 1998-99 school year and Exemplary or
Recognized standard for the previous two school years.
An Honored School
must meet Exemplary standard for the 1998-99 school year and Exemplary of
Recognized standard for the previous school year.
A Commended School
must meet Exemplary standard for the 1998-99 school year.
The above
named schools not only met the Exemplary standard for the 1998-99 school year,
but also met Exemplary or Recognized standard for the previous two school years.
Non Title 1 schools are designated as Exemplary Campuses based on TAAS
scores, attendance rates, dropout rates, and the participation and achievement
of students on college entrance exams.
Campuses and districts could be
rated exemplary, recognized acceptable or low performing based on those
assessments. Those schools have not yet been announced.
