Chairman of the House Education and Workforce Committee William Goodling (R-Pa) has announced that he will include the Rural Education Initiative in HR 2, The Students Results Act of 1999. HR 2 is the bipartisan ESEA reauthorization bill that would include Title I, Bilingual Education, Immigrant Education, Homeless Education, and several other programs for special populations. The inclusion of our rural bill in HR 2 is an extremely good sign! Now that the bill is part of the Chairman's Mark, it stands a much better chance of being included in the final ESEA reauthorization bill.

Several new cosponsors also signed on to the rural bill this week: Senators Wayne Allard (R-Colo.) and Slade Gorton (R-Wash.) and Representatives Wes Watkins (R-Okla.), Thomas Allen (R-Maine) and Martin Frost (D-Texas).
