Major Components of the ESEA Reauthorization

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act, also known as ESEA is the largest, most comprehensive federal law affecting elementary and secondary education and is up for reauthorization this year. ESEA helps all children receive an excellent education by:

  • Supplementing state and local efforts to provide all children with a high-quality education
  • Helping disadvantaged children meet high standards and master challenging curriculum through Title I programs
  • Providing professional development to teachers and school staff through Eisenhower Professional Education Program
  • Offering bilingual education programs which serve over 750,00 students for whom English is not a primary language
  • Providing school districts with education technology programs and funding the development and acquisition of technology resources
  • Funding high-quality before-and after-school programs
  • Helping develop Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities to reduce and prevent drug and alcohol use and violence in schools through education and prevention activities
  • Helping schools fund construction

Developing programs that support local school reform projects PTA is currently working to improve and strengthen ESEA by:

  • Advocating for stronger parent involvement measures so that parents can be more involved in the education of their children
  • Calling for improved efforts to ensure that all children have access to excellent education opportunities regardless of their economic background, geographic location, or disabilities
  • Seeking an increased federal investment in education so that schools can build their capacity to overcome barriers such as crumbling facilities, outdated technology, and inadequate resources which reduce their ability to provide a first-rate education
