Statement by Congressman Roy Blunt Regarding: Ergonomic Regulations

"It's hard to believe that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration would be rushing to make regulations that are likely to result in a loss of jobs without agreement in the scientific and medical communities on what causes and how to deal with repetitive stress injuries. Just last year Congress and the Administration agreed to spend $1 million on a National Academy of Science study that will be completed in 18 to 24 months. OSHA should wait for the results of that study.

"I am considering legislation to insure that any action taken by OSHA has to be based on sound science and must consider the NAS study. A number of members of Congress from both parties are interested in being part of this effort. OSHA's announcement of draft regulations should increase congressional pressure for regulations based on sound science."
