ATA Approves of House Call For More Ergonomics Research
Alexandria, Virginia, August 4 -- The American Trucking
Associations (ATA) today praised Tuesday’s U.S. House of Representatives
vote (217-209) calling for further scientific study of the controversial
issue of ergonomics before new any federal regulations may be issued. The
bill, sponsored by Congressman Roy Blunt (R-MO), had the strong support of
the ATA and its members. It prohibits the Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) from publishing its ergonomics rule until the
National Academy of Sciences (NAS) completes a comprehensive study of all
research and literature related to ergonomics.
"Any new ergonomics rule, especially one not based on sound science,
could be an undue burden for large and small businesses," said Walter B.
McCormick, Jr., ATA President and CEO. "It is important--before the
government imposes another burdensome regulation on these businesses--to
have the best scientific knowledge available for decision-makers. Right
now it isn’t there."
"We recognize our obligation to provide a safe workplace," McCormick
continued, "but if the federal government is to regulate the workplace, it
has a like obligation to do so with common sense rules based on sound
science."
ATA is a member of the National Coalition on Ergonomics (NCE), a group
of over 300 businesses and associations formed to support "research before
regulation" on ergonomics.
