RAHALL ANNOUNCES OVER $35 MILLION IN DISABLED CHILDREN EDUCATION
FUNDING FOR WEST VIRGINIA
WASHINGTON, DC--U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall announced today that
the State of West Virginia will receive over $35 million dollars in
education funding through three U.S. Department of Education programs.
The first grant, in the amount of $1,812,075.00, was allocated through
the Grants for Infants and Families Program under Part C of the
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. These funds are to be used to
provide early intervention services for infants and toddlers with
disabilities and their families. Some activities that may be supported
under this program include the provision of direct services for eligible
children that are not provided from public or private sources and the
expansion and improvement of existing services. These funds were available
on July 1st and were authorized through the Education Department
Appropriations Act.
The second award, in the amount of $3,426,378.00, will be used to
provide special education and related services to children with
disabilities aged 3 through 5 years and, at the State’s discretion, to
2-year-old children with disabilities who will reach age three during the
school year. These funds are provided through the Preschool Grants Program
under Section 619 of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
The final grant, in the amount of $30,462,839.00 will assist the State
in providing a free appropriate public education to all children with
disabilities, estimated at 49,934 children. The funds were available
beginning July 1st and are provided through the Department of Education
Appropriations Act of 1999.
"These three awards demonstrate West Virginia’s commitment to the
future of our State and our Nation," said Rahall. "Taken together, these
awards will open many doors for West Virginia children with special
needs." |
