LSC AWARDS MAJOR TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVE GRANT TO
BAY AREA LEGAL AID
SAN FRANACISCO -- Legal Services Corporation (LSC) today
announced it will award a $175,000 special grant to Bay Area Legal
Aid. This special funding is an effort to significantly increase
access to services through the use of the latest technologies. The
grants are made possible by a $5 million congressional appropriation
in this year’s budget supporting the technological advancement of
legal services.
The recently created Bay Area Legal Aid consists of three
formerly independent programs, serving seven San Francisco Bay Area
counties. The programs had previously used three separate electronic
client-serving processes. Bay Area Legal Aid will use the technology
grant to merge their computer systems into one standard system under
a project called Communications Unification and Support Project
(CUSP). CUSP will enable Bay Area Legal Aid to improve client
services in three fundamental areas: intake, brief service, and
client and community education efforts.
"It brings me great pleasure to present this special technology
grant to Bay Area Legal Aid," said LSC President John McKay.
"Through the standardization of the client-servicing processes, Bay
Area Legal Aid will provide faster, more effective services to its
clients."

non-profit corporation established by Congress in 1974 to seek to
ensure equal access to justice for all low-income
persons.
