LSC AWARDS $460,000 IN TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVE
GRANTS TO LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF HAWAII
HONOLULU -- Legal Services Corporation (LSC) today
announced it will award a $460,000 special grant to Legal Aid
Society of Hawaii (LASH). This special funding is part of LSC’s
Technology Initiative Grants (TIG) competition, an effort to
significantly increase access to services through the use of the
latest technologies. The grants are made possible by a $5 million
congressional appropriation in this year’s budget supporting the
technological advancement of legal services.
LASH will use the $460,000 technology grant to create a
partnership called Technology for Equal Justice. The partnership
seeks to improve access to justice for clients in remote areas of
Hawaii in three ways. First, it will set up video-capable
workstations on remote islands, which will enable clients to have
face-to-face interviews with legal aid attorneys. Second, a
multi-function web site will help clients locate self-help
materials, volunteer lawyers, translators, and service agencies.
Finally, the partnership will establish a statewide telephone
hotline referral system.
"I am excited by LASH’s innovative proposal," said LSC President
John McKay. "They are using technology to access a client population
that before was unreachable."

non-profit corporation established by Congress in 1974 to seek to
ensure equal access to justice for all low-income
persons.
