LSC AWARDS $315,000 IN TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVE
GRANTS TO NEW MEXICO AND ARIZONA PROGRAMS
ALBUQUERQUE -- Legal Services Corporation (LSC) today
announced it will award special grants totaling $315,000 to two
legal services programs serving New Mexico and Arizona. DNA–People’s
Legal Services, Inc. (DNA) and Community and Indian Legal Services
of Northern New Mexico (CILS) are winners of LSC’s Technology
Initiative Grants (TIG) competition. The TIG Program is designed to
improve access to justice and the legal system by using today’s
technology. These grants are made possible by an additional $5
million congressional appropriation in this year’s budget.
The $245,000 grant to the DNA program will allow them to use
satellite connections and touch screen kiosk technologies to deliver
culturally appropriate community legal education and social service
resource information to remote Navajo and Hopi communities. In this
way, DNA hopes to educate the community on an individual’s legal
rights and obligations and to increase their awareness of available
resources.
A $70,000 grant to CILS will enhance and expand client services
by enabling the program to integrate and connect its advocates via a
Wide Area Network (WAN). It will also create a toll-free statewide
helpline assuring equal justice throughout the 50,000 square mile
service area.
"The proposals submitted by DNA and CILS will impact the local
community in a positive and much needed way," said LSC President
John McKay. "The legal services community in New Mexico is on the
verge of bridging the digital divide."
