The Legal Services Corporation of Alabama
Receives More Than $300,000 in Federal Funds for
Expansion of its Services to Battered Women

Washington, D.C.—Congressman Earl F. Hilliard announced today that the Office of Justice Programs awarded $318,500 to the Legal Services Corporation of Alabama to establish and expand services for battered women.

"Many women who are victims of domestic violence cannot afford or do not have access to legal services," Congressman Hilliard said. "This grant to the Legal Services Corporation of Alabama will help them give women in Alabama the autonomy they need to end the violence and bring order into their lives."

The grant provides resources for (1) expanding legal representation in all civil matters directly related to domestic violence within the Legal Services Corporation of Alabama’s 60-county service area; (2) hiring five project attorneys; (3) and recruiting private attorneys to handle domestic violence cases on a pro bono basis. Additionally, the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the Legal Services Corporation of Alabama will conduct a statewide conference and seven regional workshops for all of s project staff and pro bono private attorneys.

For more information regarding this grant, please contact Melinda M. Waters, Executive Director, Legal Services Corporation of Alabama at (334) 264-1471.
