OTHER SUPREME COURT ACTION
BODY:
The Supreme Court
also:
-- Agreed to decide whether Congress can prohibit lawyers who are
paid with federal funds from challenging welfare laws on behalf of their
indigent clients. The court will review a ruling that the restriction on
Legal Services Corp. lawyers discriminates against particular
viewpoints and violates the First Amendment. (The cases are Legal
Services Corp. vs. Velazquez, No. 99-603, and U.S. vs. Velazquez, No.
99-960.)
-- Rejected the Clinton administration's request that it be
allowed to participate in arguments in a Nebraska case that could determine the
fate of 30 states' bans on so-called partial-birth abortion. (Stenberg vs.
Carhart, 99-830.)
-- Rejected a challenge to a Tennessee law -- similar
to those in all states -- aimed at helping authorities and the public track
anyone convicted of a sex crime. (Cutshall vs. Sundquist, 99-1123.)
--
Let stand a ruling in a Florida case that makes it more difficult for landowners
to get compensation when government regulation prevents them from developing
their land. (Good vs. U.S., 99-881.)
