HEADLINE: Broadcast Rule Is Canceled

BYLINE:  Reuters

DATELINE: WASHINGTON, Jan. 29

BODY:
The Federal Communications Commission has canceled a ruling issued last month that defined some religious television broadcasting as noneducational and possibly ineligible for special licenses.

The two-paragraph ruling, which had been included in a much longer decision about the transfer of a television license in Pittsburgh, could have threatened the broadcast licenses of a dozen or so religious stations that operate under special educational licenses.

After the ruling was issued, religious groups and their allies in Congress bombarded members of the commission with protests and legislation was introduced to eliminate the rule.
