Schedule for Constructing a Proposed High-Level Waste Repository

If the proposed high-level waste repository is approved by the President and Congress, four major steps—site characterization, site approval, licensing review, and construction—would have to be completed before operation could begin. These four steps would span more than 20 years as illustrated in the draft schedule diagram.
