Project Operations
Project Management
This function is carried out by the following organizations: Project
Control - helps managers oversee schedules, costs, and
resources. Resource
Management - provides all administrative, facility, and support
services to every Project group. Information
Management - maintains the Project's knowledge base and makes that
information readily available on computers. Contracts and
Property Management. Contracts Management sets up legal agreements
(contracts) that define the goods and services the Project needs.
Property Management records, labels, and tracks government items bought
or leased and used in the Project. Site Management
- directs Project construction work, and the operation, cost, and
scheduling of site buildings and equipment Occupational Safety and
Health - sets and enforces rules and operating procedures for safe
working conditions at the Project.
Regulatory Interactions and Compliance
This topic discusses the relationship
between DOE and other agencies, OCRWM's calendar
of events, and compliance
regulation requirements.
Quality Assurance
Read about the Project's Quality Assurance
program.
Science and Engineering Activities
This section explains the different areas Project scientists and
engineers are studying: Natural System
- the study of rock (geology), water (hydrology), and climate
(climatology). Engineered Barrier
System, or man-made parts of the repository - helps prevent the
release of highly radioactive materials from Yucca Mountain for hundreds
of thousands of years. Repository
Design - creates the blueprints or drawings used to build the
different parts of the repository, and ensures that each operates
properly. Repository
Operations - sets the operating requirements and limits that become
the basis for the designs of every part of the repository. Radiological
Safety, or the Mined Geologic Disposal System Safety Assurance group
- helps set requirements to reduce the risk of accidents that might
release radiation.
Performance Assessment
Read how Project scientists estimate the
performance of the total repository system.
Environmental Programs
There are two main areas of emphasis associated with the Project's
Environmental Programs function: Socioeconomic and
Environmental
studies.
