Quality Assurance

Quality Assurance defines the actions necessary for products or services to meet nuclear safety standards. The staff develops a program that lists the standards and states how Project workers meet them. The requirements are defined in a document called Quality Assurance Requirements and Description. This document describes ways workers study Yucca Mountain and build and safely run the repository. The Requirements Traceability Network tracks how the Project meets the standards.

Quality Assurance extends to all parts of the Project and total repository system, including receiving, moving, and disposing of highly radioactive materials. Additionally, this group sets guidelines that define quality for related U. S. Department of Energy and U.S. Geological Survey offices. Quality Assurance staff are certified auditors, scientists, engineers, inspectors, and Quality Assurance/Quality Control engineers.

Quality Assurance performs audits, management reviews, surveillances, and inspections to make sure all workers follow rules that lead to quality. They identify any actions that detract from the quality of work. Quality Assurance supplies solutions to work problems and confirms that workers follow through. They may stop work that doesn t meet written standards.

Quality Assurance expects proper documentation, good management practices, and successfully completed tasks. Every record, report, plan, test, design, and survey must meet defined standards.

Quality is an integral part of safety and is therefore critical to the Project s success. Without quality and the review of Quality Assurance, the safety of the public and workers is at risk today and tomorrow.
