SUMMARY:
Committee Serial No. 106-17.
Hearings before the Subcom on Energy and Power to consider H.R. 45, the
Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1999, to amend the
Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 to revise DOE programs for the
management of spent nuclear fuel and high-level
nuclear waste.
Includes provisions to:
a. Require DOE to design, construct, and operate in Nevada
an interim storage facility accessible by heavy-haul truck or direct rail
access, and to begin storing spent nuclear fuel and high-level
waste at the interim storage facility by June 30, 2003.
b.
Provide for site characterization activities and eventual NRC licensing of a
permanent repository for spent nuclear reactor
fuel and other high level radioactive wastes at Yucca Mountain, Nev.
Also examines status of lawsuits filed by nuclear utilities
against DOE for its failure to uphold contractual obligations under the
Nuclear Waste Policy Act to begin accepting and storing spent
fuel.
Supplementary material (p. 133-157, 214-245) includes a
submitted statement, correspondence, witnesses' written replies to Subcom
questions, and:
