ROCKY FLATS' NEW MANAGER PUSHES SAFETY
SHE CALLS IT TOP PRIORITY IN HER NUCLEAR WORK
BYLINE:
By Berny Morson, News Staff Writer
BODY:
The U.S. Energy Department's new Rocky Flats manager is a woman from Buffalo, N.Y., who headed a project to turn nuclear waste into glass logs for disposal.
Barbara A. Mazurowski currently heads the West Valley Demonstration Project, near Buffalo, where the Energy Department has made glass logs from 600,000 gallons of highly radioactive liquid waste left by a failed company that tried to reprocess nuclear fuel rods.
The logs will be shipped to the Energy Department's
Yucca Mountain
disposal site in Nevada if that facility ever opens. Mazurowski, 52, said Monday her top priority is safety.
"Safety is my whole reason to get up every single day," she said. "I do not want anyone to do work unless they know they can do the work safely. I absolutely mean it when I say it - there is nothing more important to me than the safety of the workers."
Mazurowski replaces Jessie Roberson, who was appointed by President Clinton to the Defense Nuclear Safety Board. No starting date has been set for Mazurowski.
The Rocky Flats manager oversees cleanup work being done by a private contractor and subcontractors at the defunct nuclear weapons plant 18 miles northwest of Denver.
The cleanup at West Valley also was done by private contractors. However, the Rocky Flats cleanup is much larger, costing $
4 billion, compared to $
1.4 billion at
West Valley.
Mazurowski said she'll start her duties in Colorado by touring the site. " I want to meet people," she said.
Mazurowski is a Buffalo native. Before working at West Valley, she was with the Defense Department's Contract Management office in Buffalo.
She holds a bachelor's degree in industrial technology from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a masters in business administration from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, N.Y.
Mazurowski said she visited Denver a number of years ago to attend a conference.
"It's a nice area - I really like it," she said. "I love the mountains. I love the climate. I love to ski."
