Nuclear
Plant May Store Spent Fuel on Site
BYLINE:

BODY:
Radioactive waste from the
defunct Millstone 1 nuclear power plant could be stored there if a planned
nationwide storage plant is not created, according to an official involved in
closing the plant.
The official, Robert G. Fraser, who is directing the
decommissioning of the reactor, told The Day of New London that the plant's
owner, Northeast Utilities, does not want to store nuclear waste at Millstone,
in Waterford, but if a national storage site is not opened it may have no
choice. The Federal Department of Energy has been trying to find a national
storage site for nuclear waste. Plans call for a national repository at
Yucca Mountain in Nevada to open by 2010. But the authorities
are still debating whether it would be sound policy to transport nuclear waste
across the country.
