Summary
The
safest, most environmentally sound and most cost-effective
system for managing used nuclear fuel is through limited
at-reactor storage, safe transportation, central temporary
storage and ultimate geologic disposal. Despite the clear
mandates of the 1982 Nuclear Waste Policy Act and its 1987
amendments, the federal government has yet to fulfill its
responsibility to accept and dispose of used nuclear fuel. The
industry is pursuing a three-pronged strategy—litigation,
legislation and program initiatives—to help the government
meet its legal obligation and maximize benefits of nuclear
technology in the decades to come.
