ACTION ALERT!

  • Let President Clinton know we expect him to uphold his veto promise for s1287—the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2000.
  • "Thank" or "spank" your Representative for his/her vote!

Yesterday, the House passed s1287, the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2000, by a vote of 253-167. The 167 "no" votes means we held more than enough votes to sustain the President’s promised veto of this bill.

On February 10, 2000, the Senate also passed the bill, with a vote of 64-34, another victory for us because, again, we held that crucial 1/3 to sustain the veto.

This bill will now go straight to the President’s desk. Please thank him for his veto promise and let him know that we expect him to keep that promise!

Sample text:

Dear President Clinton:

Thank you for your promised veto of s1287. This bill would seriously threaten the EPA’s authority to protect public and environmental health if Yucca Mountain is approved as a nuclear waste repository site. Further, it would launch the largest nuclear waste shipping campaign in the history of the world.

Please honor your promise and VETO S1287.

Sincerely,

(name and address)

Also, please "thank" or "spank" your representative for his or her vote. You can check to see how your Rep voted at: http://clerkweb.house.gov/cgi-bin/vote.exe?year=2000&rollnumber=63

If your Representative voted NO, then THANK him or her. If your Representative voted YES, then let him or her know you are unhappy with that vote, and encourage them to sustain the veto when the vote comes back to the House.
