CRAMER CALLS FOR HEARINGS ON RISING GAS
PRICES February 28, 2000
Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Bud Cramer (D-Ala.)
sent a letter to the Chairman of the Commerce Committee, Rep.
Tom Bliley, asking for hearings on the rising gas and diesel
prices. Just in the last month, prices for diesel and gasoline
have increased dramatically. In the 5th district, prices are
now as high as $1.47 for regular unleaded in Huntsville. In
Decatur regular unleaded prices were up to $1.43 and in the
Shoals up to $1.39. Diesel fuel is running as high as $1.63 in
North Alabama.
"The rising costs of gasoline and diesel prices are
outrageous," said Cramer. "I was travelling in the district
last week and was shocked when I filled up my car. Families
are struggling to keep gas within their budgets and truckers
are having trouble making ends meet. They are barely getting
by and I think it's time Congress took some action. I am
asking for the Commerce Committee to have hearings on this
problem in order to determine why these prices are higher and
what action should be taken. The sooner we get to the bottom
of this, the better."
In his letter to Chairman Bliley, Cramer stated "This
drastic increase has had ripple effects throughout my state
and is beginning to take a disruptive toll on the lives of
many of my
constituents."
