Transportation Committee to Examine Rising Gas Prices

Terry Calls Hearing on Repeal of Gas Tax

WASHINGTON - Cong. Lee Terry (R-Neb.) this week called for a hearing on gas prices and a proposed repeal of the 4.3 cents gas tax. The Ground Subcommittee has set the hearing for Tuesday, March 21.

"I have serious concerns about rising gas prices," Congressman Terry said. "These increases are beginning to have a financial impact on those who participate in our transportation system. Although the Transportation Committee cannot directly influence the rising cost of fuel, we can hold a hearing and bring those affected by the escalating oil prices to a forum. If a solution is not found soon, our economic expansion and our ability to fund necessary road construction projects will be in jeopardy.

"The failed energy policy of this administration has prevented oil producers from exploring new sources of domestic oil, and has made oil production in the United States too expensive. America is more dependent on foreign oil imports now than ever before, but we must not sit idly by because of the lack of leadership in the White House. We must work together to prevent future spikes in oil prices and reduce our dependence of foreign imports."

The hearing is set for next Tuesday at 2 p.m. It will take place in 2167 Rayburn House Office Building.
