ROADS ANALYSIS

The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forests is starting a roads analysis process to identify an affordable road system that meets public and resource needs. The first step will be to identify roads that should be maintained as suitable for passenger cars.

The initial stage of analysis will look at the main arterial and collector road systems, and will not consider road closure or decommissioning. The main emphasis is to make progress in bringing maintenance requirements in line with budgets.

Currently, the National Forest receives less than half the dollars needed to maintain system roads to standard. Reducing maintenance on selected roads, to high clearance vehicle standards, would reduce comfort and convenience. This strategy has the potential to reduce maintenance costs, without closing roads.
