Nethercutt Comments on the Roadless Area Conservation Rule

November 13, 2000

Representative George Nethercutt (R-WA) expressed opposition to the Roadless Area Conservation Preferred Alternative issued today by the U.S. Forest Service.

Rep. Nethercutt stated, "This policy ignores the expertise of local forest managers who best understand the needs of the forests under their supervision and the surrounding communities. I do not support this type of one-size-fits-all management policy for our public lands." Nethercutt also questioned the timing of this politically motivated initiative by stating that, "It is outrageous for the Forest Service to force this policy through during the waning days of the Clinton Administration. The current Administration should wait for the new Administration to take office before issuing the Record of Decision."

A Record of Decision on the rule will be released in about 30 days and the Forest Service expects the Administration to implement the policy 60 days following the release of the Record of Decision. If the Office of Management and Budget determines that this policy is a major rule, defined as costing over $100 million per year, Congress will have 60 days beginning on the 15th day of the next legislative session to disapprove the rule.
