Forest Service Road Management Policy

Trying to beat the clock on the close of the Clinton-Gore Administration, the Forest Service has proposed yet another policy affecting the management of our national forests. As the fifth such regulatory proposal in as many months, this road management policy would serve only to exacerbate the worst health crisis in the history of our National Forest System and further prohibit access for recreational activities such as camping, bicycling and use of RVs.

In 1999, six million acres of national forests burned to the ground. Turning a blind eye to the additional 66 million acres of national forests at high risk to catastrophic wildfire, insect infestation and disease, the Forest Service is looking to virtually prohibit the construction of all new roads – roads which are necessary for fire suppression, thinning, harvesting and planting. The Clinton-Gore policy of “Rot & Burn” obviously is concerned more with political gain than forest health.

In short, this Administration is again attempting to manage from Washington, DC what should be managed at the local level. If you want to preserve your national forests for future generations and hope to maintain access to your public lands, then click here to send the attached postcard to Forest Service Chief Mike Dombeck. This is your chance to have your opinion heard, because this Administration is not going to be asking for it.
