Organization recognizes merger’s benefits for
local business
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CHICAGO – October 3, 2000 – United Airlines Senior Vice
President for International, Regulatory and Government Affairs
Shelley Longmuir today thanked the York County, South Carolina
Economic Development Board for lending a key endorsement to United
Airlines’ proposed merger with US Airways.
In a
recently-approved resolution, the board noted: "…the proposed United
– US Airways merger should improve access to global markets through
additional direct international flights and provide not only greater
potential for foreign investment but also tourism and convention
related business…"
Longmuir was pleased to learn of the
board’s full support for the merger. "We strongly believe in the
benefits this merger will bring to businesses and consumers in South
Carolina and across the country," she said. "I am delighted that
this organization recognizes the benefits for local businesses
provided by the combined carrier."
United Airlines offers
more than 2,400 scheduled flights a day on a route network that
spans the globe. United plans to serve all markets currently served
by US Airways in Charleston. It plans non-stop or one-stop service
to 140 domestic and international destinations, 30 more than US
Airways serves today from Charleston and 54 more than United
currently serves.
Additionally, Charleston is less than an
hour away by air from United’s expanded hub in Charlotte, NC, which
will give Charleston United passengers unprecedented access to
hundreds of domestic and international destinations. The combination
of United and US Airways means South Carolina air travelers will be
served by new online (same carrier) service to the West Coast,
Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.
