Statement by Governor Gilmore Concerning Federal Advisory
Commission on Electronic Commerce
RICHMOND- "I commend Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott for his
successful efforts to resolve the conflict over the federal Advisory
Commission on Electronic Commerce. His tremendous leadership has paved the
way for the commission to finally begin considering policies regarding
electronic commerce and the Internet.
"I was genuinely looking forward to working with Netscape chief James
Barksdale, who has now stepped aside. But I congratulate Mr. Barksdale for
his willingness to advance the best interests of the country. The members
of this commission will certainly seek his guidance and counsel over the
next year, as well as other leaders in industry and government.
"As chairman, I look forward to working with the other 18 members of
the panel to deliver a fair report to Congress based on our
recommendations of Internet-related and e-commerce policies."
