Virginia Governor Gilmore Announces Historic First Meeting of the
Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce
RICHMOND- Governor Jim Gilmore today announced the historic
first meeting of the federal Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce
(ACEC). The meeting will be held on June 21st and 22nd in the University
Centers at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Created by Congress in October 1998, the 19-member Commission will be
hosted by Governor Gilmore, who is expected to be named chairman.
"This commission is tasked with producing what is arguably the most
important policy initiative of the information age," said Governor
Gilmore. "Our recommendations on the critical issues of electronic
commerce and tax policy will have global implications."
The ACEC has been charged with studying federal, state, local and
international taxation and tariffs on transactions using the Internet and
Internet access. Central to the examination of these issues is the fact
that the Internet knows no geographical boundaries and by its very nature
violates those geographical boundaries that hinder other forms of
commerce. The commission is also expected to analyze the implications of
personal privacy on the taxation of Internet purchases.
"Personal privacy is fundamental to the freedoms we all enjoy," said
Governor Gilmore. "The protection of the privacy of Internet purchasers is
of paramount concern as we address these issues."
Governor Gilmore looks forward to working with the other commission
members in a fair and open environment, receiving a spectrum of views and
deliberating these momentous issues with great care. Further details on
the commission's first meeting will follow shortly.
