SECTION: CAPITOL HILL HEARING TESTIMONY

LENGTH: 294 words

HEADLINE: TESTIMONY February 02, 2000 JOHN KASICH REPRESENTATIVE SENATE BUDGET FISCAL 2001 BUDGET ISSUES

BODY:
STATEMENT FROM JOHN KASICH REGARDING MASSACHUSETTS GOV. PAUL CELLCI'S TESTIMONY BEFORE THE SENATE BUDGET COMMITTEE February 2, 2000 Governor Paul Cellucci's testimony is right on the mark. There simply is no compelling, reason to force consumers to pay sales taxes on goods and services they purchase over the Internet. The sales tax is a relic of horse-and-buggy days, with no place in an economy that moves at the speed of light. The Internet and e-commerce have the potential to do more than just change we interact as human beings. While traditional retailers and on-line businesses need to be treated equitably, slapping sales taxes on Internet purchases, and slowing the growth of this revolutionary new means of communication, is simply not the way to do it.
