THE e-FREEDOM
UPDATE: YOUR GUIDE
TO THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE NEW INTERNET TAX SCHEMES November 11,
1999
e-FREEDOM COALITION ROLLS
OUT PLAN TO FIGHT "E-TAXES" This week more than 20 consumer,
taxpayer and public policy groups banded together and unveiled a
dramatic proposal to the federal Advisory Commission on Electronic
Commerce to slash barriers to Internet access and keep new sales tax
schemes OFFline. More than 50 reporters attended what was at times a
standing-room only news conference at the National Press Club in
Washington. The group was joined by House Budget Committee Chairman
John Kasich, who pledged to push many of the group’s recommendations
in Congress. Two members of the federal Commission, Grover Norquist
and Stan Sokul, offered praise for the comprehensive plan. Contact:

of the plan are available at www.e-freedom.org.
BIG-GOVERNMENT GROUPS PLAN NEW
SCHEME TO TAX CYBERSPACE A "who’s who" of big government groups are readying their
own proposal to the federal Advisory Commission on Electronic
Commerce. Unlike the e-Freedom plan, the big-government-groups
propose a massive, expensive new bureaucracy to stick everyone who
buys a product online or through a catalog with new sales tax
collection. A summary of their plan for a multi-billion dollar tax
increase is available at www.atr.org/technology/Big7Proposal.htm. To
interview an expert from the e-Freedom Coalition on this Internet
tax scheme, contact Chad Cowan at Americans for Tax Reform,

VIRGINIA GOVERNOR OFFERS PLAN
TO MAKE NET A PERMANENT "TAX FREE ZONE" Online consumers got a boost on Tuesday
when Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore, Chairman of the Advisory
Commission on Electronic Commerce, unveiled his vision for the
Internet: easily accessible, and free of the heavy hand of
government tax collectors. Gilmore’s plan is available online at
www.atr.org/technology/gilmore.htm. Contact: Mark A. Miner at (804)

URGENT: TAXPAYER GROUPS WARN
THAT FEDERAL COMMISSION NEEDS TO HEAR FROM THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, NOT
JUST POLITICIANS By
law, the Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce must accept
comments from the public! Taxpayer groups are urging all Americans
who oppose new tax collection schemes for the Internet to make their
opinions known by sending a message to the Commission at
comments@ecommercecommission.org.
FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSIONER
WARNS AGAINST TAXING E-COMMERCE Federal Trade Commissioner Orson Swindle recently gave a
speech on the dangers and complications of taxing online commerce,
warning that "the promises of electronic commerce have those in
government excited: the politicians see something to tax and more
money to spend, and the regulators see something with endless
possibilities to regulate." The full text is available at
