The Portland-based
Cascade Policy Institute and more than 20 other consumer, taxpayer,
and public policy organizations have endorsed a proposal that would
help expand Net access and keep new tax collection schemes off the
Internet. The e-Freedom Coalition proposal was unveiled this morning
at a Washington, DC news conference and will be presented to the
federal Advisory Commission on Electronic
Commerce.
Cascade president
Steve Buckstein said, "The Internet is creating unprecedented job
opportunities and delivering a bounty of information into the homes
and offices of Oregonians. Recent proposals to levy taxes on
e-commerce or Internet access will jeopardize our economic growth
and hinder the spread of Net benefits to low-income
individuals."
The e-Freedom
Coalition proposal advocates: a permanent ban on sales and use taxes
that apply to online commerce; that only those companies with a
physical presence in a state can be compelled to collect sales
taxes; and, the removal of taxes and regulations that drive up the
cost of Internet access. Complete details are available at
www.e-freedom.org.
"Oregon is
an attractive state for e-commerce because we have no general sales
tax," notes Buckstein. "We should not let government here or
elsewhere stifle the budding 'e-conomy' by imposing new, or
continuing old, barriers to the free flow of information and
commerce."
The temporary
Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce is winding down its study
of Internet tax issues, and will report its findings to Congress
next year. For more information on the federal panel, or to weigh in
with comments, visit www.ecommercecommission.org or write comments@ecommercecommission.org.
