HEADLINE: Tort Reform

BODY:

To the Editor:

The interests of the average American can get lost when discussing the battle between big business and trial lawyers over tort "reform" (front page, March 23).

Our civil justice system is the one place where poor or vulnerable citizens can challenge corporate misconduct and force changes in corporate behavior. Without trial lawyers, these cases could never be brought. Tort reforms are being enacted around the country because the corporate world uses its vast financial resources to publicly demonize lawyers who represent consumers. Take away these legal rights, and trial lawyers will find some other way to make a living. But it is our fundamental right to hold corporate wrongdoers accountable that will be lost.
