HEADLINE: Tort Reform: It's Lawyers Against the Rest of Us

BODY:

To the Editor:

Justice is in a sorry state when the computer industry has the political muscle (money) to get a law passed limiting its liability for its own negligence ("Senate Passes Bill to Curb Lawsuits From Year 2000 Bug," Business Day, June 16). It is amazing that the industry trembles in fear of being sued for selling a faulty product. It is also astounding that the Senate is knuckling under to the industry's money and claims that such immunity would be good for the economy. Whose economy? Of course it would be good for the computer industry, but what about small businesses? Where are they to turn when their software crashes on Jan. 1? Why would software manufacturers fear lawsuits if their products were sound?
