HEADLINE: Tort Reform: It's Lawyers Against the Rest of Us

BODY:

To the Editor:

Lisa Kimmel (letter, June 12) asserts that tort law reform makes "little real economic sense." But witness the attempt by the legal profession in cooperation with various government agencies to extort money from the tobacco industry. And now lawyers are trying to establish liability on the part of gun manufacturers for crimes committed by individuals. Are we supposed to believe these multibillion-dollar lawsuits have no impact on employment or insurance rates? Common sense says the greatest beneficiaries of the avalanche of laws that have been written are the lawyers themselves. Bravo to Gov. George W. Bush of Texas and anyone else who would take these people to task.
