CUNNINGHAM AMENDMENT TO PROTECT COMMUNITIES AND FAMILIES PASSES HOUSE

Measure Would Allow Off-Duty and Retired Officers to Carry Their Firearms

WASHINGTON, D.C. B Representative Randy ADuke@ Cunningham (R - San Diego) this morning passed his ACommunity Protection Act@ as an amendment to the Mandatory Gun Show Background Check Act (H.R. 2122). A victory for our communities, the Community Protection Act gives off-duty and retired police officers the right to carry their firearms throughout the nation to help prevent crime. The measure passed the House by a vote of 372-53.

AI am thrilled this amendment passed the House today and am proud to support our law enforcement community. My amendment realizes the need for retired officers to protect themselves, their families and our communities even when off-duty or retired. The oath to serve and protect our communities does not go away when officers retire,@ Cunningham said.

AToo often police officers come upon situations where they can prevent violent crimes and save lives but aren=t able to defend themselves and protect those around them. Thousands of equipped, trained and certified officers will now be allowed to continually serve and protect our communities regardless of jurisdiction, and at no cost to taxpayers,@ Cunningham said.

Cunningham=s legislation is endorsed by nearly every law enforcement organization in America and several other anti-crime groups.
