WASHINGTON, D.C.- -Today, Rep. Richard Burr (NC-05) voted
in favor of H.R. 3660, the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act,
which passed the House of Representatives overwhelmingly by a
vote of 287 to 141. The Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2000
(H.R. 3660) prohibits partial-birth abortion unless it is
necessary to save the life of the mother.
"By voting to end this practice we emphasize the importance
of a human life, and we recognize the intangible values of
children and families," Burr said. "Over and over again
Congress has voted to outlaw this practice, only to be
consistently vetoed by the President. I hope that by once
again expressing our overwhelming opposition to this inhumane
practice we can make the President understand that life is
sacred," Burr continued.
The legislation is supported by a number of organizations
including the American Medical Association and the National
Right to Life Committee. In spite of this continuous support,
President Clinton has twice vetoed the legislation.
"This issue is too important to give up on," Burr said.
"Each time it comes to the floor we send a message to the
White House that procedures like this will not be tolerated.
It’s time the Administration placed the same value on human
life as the Congress did here today," Burr said.
