Washington—WASHINGTON-- The US House, with
Congressman Peterson's support, passed a bill today to ban partial birth
abortions as a legal abortion procedure, except in cases where a mother's
life is in danger. "Partial birth abortion is a barbaric and cruel
procedure that should not be allowed in this nation as an elective form of
abortion." He cited one abortion doctor who estimated that 80% of partial
birth abortions were performed when it was not medically necessary. The
bill passed by a large enough margin to override a Presidential veto.
The bill imposes fines or potential imprisonment of up to two years, and allows the father (if he is married to the mother) or maternal grandparents to file a civil lawsuit against the doctor for monetary damages. "I have always been pro-life, but even many who are pro-choice would agree that partial birth abortion is a process that should be eliminated except in life or death situations," said Peterson. He noted that the American Medical Association has stated that the partial birth abortion procedure is "not good medicine." The President previously vetoed two similar measures. However, Peterson
believes that this bill will have strong enough support to override a
potential veto in both chambers of Congress. In addition, this current
bill contains a strongly worded provision which clearly protects a woman
who must have the procedure to save her life. This provision may increase
the chances of support from the President. | |
